Masks of the Mind: ARC 1 – The Touched Room

If you were left in one silent room with ten objects but couldn’t recall which were real, would you trust your senses? Or question everyone around you as an enemy? “Masks of the Mind: ARC 1 – The Touched Room” collapses reason like a rag doll in a downpour, hounding every choice.

Protagonist Naoya Shiro – a 17-year-old with a memory he can’t quite trust – walks the world half awake. He wants peace, only. Some days he wonders what stillness is. His sister Kyoko checks the locks five times before bed. Their close friend and school star Haruto will not sit by closed doors. Each teen wears their roles like ill-fit gloves.

It starts with a rumor at Komai High. The “Touched Room” deep in the east basement. Last week, three students quit school or simply vanished. The only rumor is that the ones who last longer hear whispers in corridors: “Which voice is yours?” Naoya’s try to ignore these lines. But when a mix-up gives him detention in 2-E, he finds a faded pass at his desk. It says only: ROOM: B-7, after dusk. His friends dare him. Would you have gone?

He goes.

Naoya opens the gray door. Inside, the space shouldn’t unsettle anyone. There’s six chairs, a wobbly old TV tuned to static, and a wall of school plaques. But he sees five other people he didn’t expect – all familiar, all silent. The teachers called this room “Remedial Therapy.” Yet someone taped those words over with paper.

One kid, a rival named Taro, clutches his bag tight. The twins Rina and Reina haven’t spoken yet. TV flicker lights Naoya’s hands. Cold sweat climbs under the rules posted on the wall:
1. Speak truth.
2. Recall only what you can touch.
3. Don’t turn the TV off.

Kyoko, outside, panics when two hours pass. She can’t find a way in. How far would you push for your sibling? Beside her, Haruto hesitates but ends up picking the lock with a bent hairpin. They both break inside, faces drawn, and see that Naoya and four others sit, eyes open — not blinking, not moving. Only five watches tick.

The next morning, Naoya goes home but remembers nothing of the night after the first hello. It’s as if he dreamed eating, talking, touching cold tile. Every finger smells faintly of static. Stranger, each person remembers a different thing: Taro claims he confessed his secret crush out loud; Reina has a burn mark she can’t explain.

Detective Hoshimura – slight, mid-forties, always in battered tweed – interrogates them. “We know someone turned off the TV. Which of you moved?” No one will say more than, “I remember touching my sweater.” Haruto searches their phones. There’s photos no one claims to have taken. Broken steps in dark halls. Naoya quietly asks, “Who’s leading the lies? Us or someone hidden in the power lines?” Wouldn’t you?

The news tricks out in town: those who enter the “Touched Room” walk a bit differently for weeks after. Eyes longer on strangers, pause by unplugged TVs. Midrar Otsuka, campus dream-reader and subtle trickster, watches Naoya from the gazebo. Midrar moves in slow, patient arcs, taking notes as lights blow out. She smells something rotten, but it isn’t ghost stories.

The group forms a pact. If they can’t wake up truth in one another, they’ll drag the lies to light before school’s end. Rina cuts her thumb to see if she wakes up bleeding. Kyoko leaves notes in Naoya’s shoes now — short and simple: “We eat at seven. Your toast’s burnt. Check again.” Naoya looks down sometimes, not sure if memory or a lure.

So much changes in just two weeks.

Expert Dr. Takagi, school psychologist, shows up next. She wants logs, urges strict routines, but every concern shadows the past. Naoya is forced to keep a diary. His entries falter: “Fell asleep early. No dreams.” But everyone sees him waking cold and tired, even on record hot nights. aicg-7979-img-2-6a348c0f64f85.png

Case files emerge from the year 1999: students vanished, the same room. Haruto’s uncle, now an ex-cop with sharp memory and bitter eyes, swears no one solved the old case. Haruto breaks the news – documents vanished twice since. Are the files part of the riddle, or someone’s trap for curious minds?

The plot splits: Kyoko sneaks into the admin’s vaults, Naoya retraces his steps with Mr. Suga (math teacher, hates odd numbers), while Midrar stalks records at city hall. Hairline cracks show in every truth they once counted on. An object moved here; again, nobody recalls why. School’s camera footage blanks each night around the room after dusk.

Tension blooms. Arguments bubble under the surface. Trust fractures as each one suspects the other might lie, or worse. Is there a leader, or simply six teens wrestling fear in chorus?

Then comes the shatter-point. Naoya returns to the Touched Room, alone, diary aflame in his pocket. There’s a folder on the chair, with his name in a child’s script. Before he touches it, every world flickers like a broken tape loop. Haruto’s voice over the removed speakers: “If you’re awake—look behind you now.”

The screen cuts out. End of ARC 1.

So, what would you risk for memory – or fear you forgot already?
