The Lost Cipher: The Case of Crimson Station

Some nights you feel like the sky is pressing in. That’s what the Crimson City skyline looked like to Kai Tsukino. Rain and blinking blue street lights, a city without sleep. He sat slouched in the fifth train car from the engine as dusk sank behind gray towers. Crimson Station—packed with tired faces, tails of steam, and an odd silence. Kai’s eyes lingered on an old bulletin. ‘Disappearance at Platform 13. Tips Needed.’ Had you noticed posters like that before?

A call came through his private radio, fizzing between static: ‘Another sighting. Midnight. Don’t come alone.’ It was Hanako, his partner, voice clipped as always. She was waiting back in the station’s security office, hidden away with her arcade-addicted hacker brother, Jun. If you stand in front of surveillance screens long enough, do you start to hate what you see?

Rain kept misting in thin sheets. People bustled past: office drones, giggling school girls, two gig workers toting ramen. Nobody else seemed to notice the painted line at Platform 13 — red, then black. People say a girl vanished here two months past. For three decades, folks talked of ghosts at Crimson Station. Old Jin at the news kiosk was found mumbling, ‘Tracks eat the missing.’ Total nonsense, right? Except for all the missing people on file… and the new text on Kai’s phone: ‘Solve it or lose more tonight.’

Kai joined Hanako at her dark post. Jun leaned in close to a screen, glasses flickering. ‘All clear for the last thirty, Hanako.’ She shot him a serious look. ‘Anything odd from Wednesday logs?’ He chewed a snack, tapped keys. ‘Thermal spike, 01:12, platform 13. Then—lost signal.’ Hanako’s mouth went tight. ‘We need real clues, not sensor noise.’

Kai scrolled CCTV frames on a spare tablet. He found a snapshot: lone figure, striped coat, gloved hand at the old coin-op locker. ‘Recognize him?’ Hanako frowned. ‘Possible threat? Or a regular?’ Jun shrugged. ‘No locker has matched a print for months.’ At the lockers, Hanako snapped photos for analysis. Traces of oil, scuffed door. Kai picked a torn train card from under the bench. Guys, if you found a scrap like that yourself, would you stake a whole night on its meaning?

They studied the faded card. ‘The mark here—see the looping numbers,’ said Jun, doodling in a pad. Odd pattern, almost code-like. Hanako grabbed her phone: ‘We can decrypt later, but if it’s a transit cipher… Someone made sure we’d find it.’

Three clues now: phantom person on camera, scrambled numbers, vanished girl’s old satchel in holding. Details peeled from dry police reports by Jun’s precious script: “At least twenty missing in ten years. Nobody ever found.” Not one. Fingers of suspicion tightened on their old lead, Conductor Taguchi.

Here’s where things start shifting. Kai put it plainly, ‘Either we follow this lead out tonight, or risk someone else vanishing.’ Hanako agreed, voice flat. ‘Everyone’s said Crimson Station is a graveyard. But tracks can’t swallow people whole–unless someone’s helping.’

Mayhem would be far too simple a word for what happened once they watched the witching hour draw near. No crowd now. Thunder rolled. Then—an old train that shouldn’t be running crept into Platform 13. Windows fogged, number faded. The onboard lights stuttered, revealed pale faces drawn in hollow stares. Kai’s pulse spiked. ‘These aren’t on the schedule.’

Jun buzzed louder: ‘You seeing three cars? There’s only supposed to be two for cargo, midnight.’ Hanako risked a step closer, handed Kai a maglight. As if on cue, a locker rattled. The gloved man, striped coat, emerged from near the train door… Quiet crowd. Cheap perfume tangled with train grease. Did your anxiety jump, reading this?

‘Are you lost, officer? Or are you just in the wrong memory?’ His voice carried—empty, tattered. Before Hanako could snap a photo, something odd happened—the emergency alarm pinged every door wide. Old air gushed.

A flash ran past Kai’s vision. A young woman, scared, pushing hard through people who barely turned. Hanako moved, but not fast enough. Kai lunged. The woman’s voice cut low: ‘Don’t trust the doors.’ Then she vanished through the back gap between train cars, followed by the gloved person. For a moment, Kai wondered if she was real at all. Platform 13 pulsed orange in the security camera glow. They lost all video for three minutes, according to Jun’s notes. Coincidence?

Now for the toughest decision yet. Kai argued they should board the old train. Hanako said, ‘You know there’s a trap.’ Jun threatened to call for backup. ‘Police shut down the line once before—it only made folks angrier. They keep hiding what they find.’ Was history repeating?

Kai pocketed the code scrap, took Hanako’s arm firmly. ‘If people are disappearing, I’d rather go missing together than wait out here.’ She nodded. ‘Fine. On three.’ Sweat iced cold along Kai’s skin. Anyone sane would’ve walked away, but sometimes you have to pay the price for others. aicg-3689-img-5-6a21304742574.png

Doors hissed open. The car was empty, too quiet, just lost time and dust on cedar seats. A strange cold ripped past Hanako’s sleeve, and phones lost signal. No way back now. Roar and motion—they barely made it as the doors closed.

Kai mouthed a shaky ‘Hello?’ only to be met by whispers, not words. Hanako checked their timer. Jun’s voice scratchy on a radio: ‘Signal’s lost, but your location’s still live, I think.’ For now….

The train angled down—on a track nobody mapped. Lights flickered to black. Showdown ahead, and the truth hidden past the next tunnel. If the story ends here, where would you begin looking for answers?
