The Quick Spike Gambit

Summer feels thick in the gym. Shoya Matsuda wipes his forehead and squints at the gym lights. Why do they always seem so bright, just before practice?

‘We run that drill one more time,’ captain Aoi Tsukishima says, clapping her hands. Nobody complains. Shoya wants to get stronger. Volleyball isn’t about glory for him. It’s the one space where things make sense.

Today, they’re up against Minato High for a friendly match. There’s pressure. He tries not to think about last year’s final set: his missed serve still haunts him on quiet nights. Did something like that ever keep you up?

‘Hey! Shoya! Focus. Just breathe,’ scolds Kenzo, libero and all-around tease. Kenzo hides nerves behind that big grin. Shoya can’t hide much. Neither can Yume, the new setter. Yume’s shy, eyes down as she focuses a little too hard on her hands.

Minato waltz in, smirks on their faces. You know that cocky swagger other school’s top teams have? Taiga Hayami, their star, winks at Shoya mid-stretch. That’s something that burns. Aoi leans in, tone hard. ‘They’re good, but they’re not giants. Play your rhythm. We try out the quick sets this time.’

First set bangs loud. Tsukishima’s spikes thrill the few spectators. Children by the door press up to the glass.

Minato move fast, taking the lead with Taiga’s jump serve. The ball dips hard and late each time. Kenta swears as a pass skims past his fingers. Score: 10-4 Minato. Nobody on Karasuno wants to repeat last year. Shoya looks to coach, jaw set. Their new play’s only been used in practice. ‘It’s now or nothing,’ he whispers to Yume.

Mid-set, they try the quick. The idea is easy—a blinding 1-speed toss, Shoya dashing ahead of Yume’s hands. They’ve never scored it in a real match. Nerves can steal timing and clear heads. It often does.

‘Just run with me,’ he says to Yume, nods so she’ll meet his eyes. She stares back. You care about people who try, don’t you?

The toss comes lower than ideal. Taiga is there, all full of reach and fire. But Shoya stretches—that split instant where both of them leave the ground—he can feel weightless. Contact: the ball zings over the blocker’s arms just out of reach.

The silence cracks with cheers from Karasuno’s small group. Did you ever have a moment so small, but so loud in your chest?

Next, Minato adapts. Their coach shouts pointers—a sharp voice echoes every serve. They double up blocks on Aoi. Yume wobbles but tries again. There’s this play where two blockers bite and it opens a line. Shoya dashes, sweat flying as he fakes, then tips the ball clean.

Set point comes too fast. 23-24, Minato up. Shoya at the back row. Kenzo squats with focus, mouth wide in anticipation. ‘We’ve got one shot,’ huffs Aoi.

Serve flies, low and mean. Yume dives. The dig’s barely up—but Shoya’s moving, knees burning as he reaches. Volley, push, scramble—all instinct, sore arms yelling. Yume’s toss floats; everyone’s blocking the net.

‘Matsuda!’ comes a scream from the bench, razor-sharp.

He swings, fingers bite the stitched surface, sharp and hard as metal. The ball streaks by the untouched block. Inside-out shot. Cheers sail from their team and even some Minato fans.

Going into the next set, the coach calls timeout. ‘You’re thinking too narrow. Make them adapt to your pace. Try the two-person quick again, but switch who’s striking.’ The idea: have Kenta fake quick and feed Aoi, hoping to further dismantle the other’s defense. Maybe your coach has done something as wild before?

Yume sweats, fists clutched. ‘I didn’t think you’d really try…hard.’ Shoya looks puzzled. ‘Why shouldn’t we?’

The second set starts slower, each play tighter. Crowd thickens near the foyer; word spreads fast when Karasuno brings heat underdog style. Rival teams peek in, exchanging notes on their phones or tablets. Some hide smiles behind towels.

Kenzo fires serve after risky serve. One floats out, but the pressure tells—Minato’s passes start slipping. Still, mistakes sneak in. Aoi overreaches, finger bends awkward on one block. She’s down, clutching her hand. She shakes her head. ‘I’m ok. Let’s finish this.’

But Kenzo intercepts coach at the corner. ‘We should sub her. She won’t tell you. But look at how she’s holding it.’ Coach frowns. ‘One more point. No heroics.’

The next rally kaleidoscopes—block, dig, pinch set, back attack by Taiga. Yume grits her teeth and sells a perfect feint. Kenta crushes a quiet spike, shocking even himself. Score slides tight: 21-21.

Suddenly Aoi crumples in a short rally. Silence, as if the room stopped breathing.

Shoya kneels. ‘It’s gotta be me next one.’ She offers him the captain band, snipping the velcro. ‘Win this or I haunt you.’ How hard would that pressure hit you?

With the captain band tight on his arm, crowd buzzing, and Minato prepping deep serves, the set hangs at 25-24 Karasuno. Yume looks at Shoya. He nods once, slow. That weight is strange—almost heavier than anything he’s known yet dizzying as hope. Can he shoulder it though…?
