Disquiet in Classroom 2-A
Shu Ikarashi never thought a normal April morning could go this way. He walks to school with Ayane, best friend since third grade, laughing to chase off exam stress. Something’s wrong with their homeroom, though. Cold flickers somehow pass between students whenever a name is called for roll.
Homeroom starts. A crisp light cuts through the window blinds. “Isaya Mareko?” says the teacher. The girl by the window stands, unblinking, silent a full five seconds before she sits. The teacher keeps going, chalk squeaking extra loud. Shu glances at Ayane as if to ask, do you feel this too?
The day creeps. Over lunch, Fukumoto (as loud as he is tall) grabs Shu’s shoulder. “Dude. Isn’t anyone else freaked out? It’s like people forget who Mareko is the minute she walks away!” He shudders, waits for the group to tease, but everyone’s quiet. Have you ever felt the sense your memories aren’t steady, slipping loose if you don’t hold? All afternoon, Shu glimpses Isaya from behind. She passes posters, shadow falling neatly as a knife over every surface. Other kids’ faces slack as she enters a room, mind skipping a second, then they blink, reset, forget.
Classes drag slower. Ayane tries to talk to Isaya by the water tap. “Hi! Um… did you always have that star necklace?” Isaya barely looks up. “Isn’t it pretty? You gave it to me.” Ayane steps back. Her jaw slips open—a gift she’d never bought.
That night, Shu can’t sleep. Thoughts loop his head in jagged clips. Who set the evening sky to strobe, or are his eyes tired? A sharp ringing tumbles down his spine. He grabs his phone, scrolls the message app, skims group chats: zero mentions of Isaya up to last week; after yesterday, dozens. None add up. 
Are fragile pieces of the class mind being swapped? Are they trapped in some edge of space-time, or is it madness? He wants to shake Ayane awake: too late. She’s dreaming of someone who never existed last semester.
After a fevered morning, Shu runs to school and corners Fukumoto. Alone by the stairwell, Fukumoto dabs at his nose (he gets nervous bleeds). “You see it too? Isaya… she knows things about us, slips them in when nobody’s looking.” Shu’s stomach knots. They’ve never met her parents. Why do they all have faint worry when she smiles at them? Can’t shake that chill.
Ms. Tsuchiya marks the blackboard with thick, creaking strokes: Test Friday. Her sleeve lifts. There’s a spiral mark tattooed on her wrist no one noticed last week. Mareko walks in and the mark twitches. Every time she leaves, one more spiral appears on another student. Someone giggles for no reason—Shu sees the lines bloom along necks. Did you ever feel like your identity isn’t safe, just one tiny push from slipping away?
Ayane starts to stutter. In PE, balls fly past—not one hits Mareko. In the changing room, whispers clutch at the window when she comes near. Shu speaks through a thickening haze, forcing words into shape. “Who… are you?” Mareko pauses, blue eyes electric and cold. She smiles so gently. “Isn’t it strange to forget what haunts you most?” She touches his cheek. 
After school, Shu checks home pictures. Dinner photos show the desk, dark plates, open chairs—one spot beside Ayane is blurry, wrong: as if someone erased or added by accident. Stories in whisper web forums from their neighborhood match: images flicker, voices drop lines (“There was a girl… can’t name her…?”), news anchors pause too long on Mondays since March.
He’s not alone, at least. Yet memory works against him. Three group chats empty mid-message someone talks about Mareko. Fukumoto leaves sick, notebook full of strange, spinning symbols. Ayane has deep bruises on her arms, ring shapes looping over skin. Mareko stands by school gate: quiet jackets shifting with the dusk wind. She isn’t swallowed by dark—she bends it close around her, like silk, like hiding soft teeth. 
Shu grabs Ayane and tries to leave. Footsteps slide behind them. The air feels elastic, sticky, every lightbulb flicking at a different beat. A torn uniform shirt flutters past (no owner in sight). A sly whisper: “Why run? You’d only come back once you forget you left!” Isaya’s laugh pulls dusty strings in his mind; something gasps back in half-light.
The arc closes on Shu in a locked classroom. All doors open onto night hallways, where Isaya’s voice repeats from unseen speakers. He tries to scream but hears a different name come from his mouth. Roll call goes again—the class, empty but for backlit shapes, and he’s scared to check which list he’s on. Do you wonder, if you shut your eyes tonight, who remembers you tomorrow?
Flick to black: Isaya steps from a seam in the wall, more spiral scars trailing up her neck. Someone calls home—voice on the other end stutters, just static. Credits roll over backpack straps, notebooks slowly turning blank one page at a time.
