The Lost Diary of Crimson Gold
Tomo Akai likes old maps more than most people like sweets. He spends his middays in the library basement, searching for skipped stories from decades past. Why would a boy waste summer indoors, though? “There’s a story in every page,” Tomo says, trailing an ink-stained finger over faded lines.
June rains stop, so Tomo heads for the roof. Hana, his best friend, follows. “Still hunting old legends?” She jabs his notes. Tomo grins. He leans in close. “This time, it might be real. I found a riddle about the crimson gold.” Now she’s hooked as well. Who wouldn’t be curious?

Inside the clock tower, gears grind overhead. Dust floats. They search every far corner. Hana spots a tiny key lodged deep inside a hinge. Did someone hide their secrets hoping nobody would care enough to look behind rusty gears and shadows? “A key!” she chirps.
Under the bell, Tomo finds an old plank stained red. He raps it—hollow! Soon, they uncover a tiny worn box tied with string. Daichi wants to open it at once. Hana stares. “Not here. We need quiet.” As they sneak out, a teacher’s heavy step echoes nearby. Tomo freezes.
Suddenly, two options open. Dash for the stairs and risk the halls. Wait and hope silence works. How do you handle trouble—run or wait? The three wait. Luck helps. Teacher’s voice fades. Tomo lets his breath out. They hurry down, gripping treasure tight.
Back in Tomo’s safe kitchen, they cut the string. Inside the box sits a small leather-bound diary and a folded slip. The diary—yellowed, brittle—dips them all into a much older summer break. It begins: “Crimson gold blooms at night, but only if you’ve heard the truth.” Short, neat lines fill the diary, with a map and dates from fifty years ago. Their hands shake a bit over every clue unraveled but their eyes shine with hope. No party row here, only steady joy.
They’re hooked. The second riddle hints at the old botanical sheds. Headlines of plants from years back. Why did those sheds get sealed? Daichi flips the diary, says, “Overgrown, deserted, haunt of every stray cat.” Hana tilts her head, tearing scraps of map apart with her eyes. “We go tonight,” Tomo murmurs, barely holding down his bubbling need to know. They’re almost out the door before they think about flashlight batteries.

Inside, moths swirl in circling light. They spot, between flower pots, an iron ring. Hana calls out. They’ve got to dig beneath dying violets, dodging spider silk. An old tin unfolds—a faded coin rests inside, stamped: “Crimson Gold. First found, June 3, 1974.”
But the diary waits for its last secret, scrawled upside down: “Gold claimed, but never owned. Set it under the weeping crow where summer memories end.” Crow? Only the school’s old stone statue by the pond fits. It weeps every rainy season. Kids call it “the crow that wants cake.”
Dawn crackles. The gang digs around that stoic statue. Dirt comes up slow. Just before school bells toll, a strange inscription under damp roots stops Tomo. The coin slips into place. Mechanism clicks. Slab opens. Tomo gasps. A box of tarnished medals, crammed notes—memories and stories that immortalize students from one lost, forgotten year.
They don’t find real gold or gems—just old hopes, hidden and heavy, better than cash. Hana grins: “Feels like we discovered more than a secret or two.” Daichi adds, brushing mud off: “Maybe this summer won’t get beat.” Tomo nods: he started for treasure, found a time capsule and trust. Their small bond replaces gold.
But as light streams in, the bell rings. A mysterious shadow slips away near the hedge. They’re not the only ones after secrets here.
