Whispered Flames, Shifting Tides
Prologue: Ember of Ambition
Ryuu Hanabusa is running. In the quiet city of Miho, every day looks the same—unless you’re him. Ryuu wants to lead the clan one day. The only problem? He can never get his water gift to work. Everyone else in the Hanabusa family moves water around with a flick of the hand. Every time Ryuu tries, all he gets is steam.
Miyako steps up as a voice of calm. Look, Ryuu, don’t force it. Can’t you sense how the energy pulls? “Water doesn’t need you to push it around,” she says. “Just let it move. Why are you so tense?” Ryuu sucks in a gulp of air and scowls. “Easy for you. I’m the weak link. Dad’s right—I should give up.”
But his younger brother, Shun, just wants to be anywhere else. He drops rocks into a puddle. “Can we go home now?”
Act One: The Rumors on the Wind
A rumor stirs at the market. Winds strong enough to tear rooftops sweep through the east hills. People say the river spirits are angry—or maybe an ice summoning got out of hand. Have you ever heard stories like this, where nobody can agree on what’s real? Ryuu overhears folks blaming every clan except their own.
Miyako yells, “Don’t look away, Ryuu. This is our town.” She plants herself in front of him and hands him a half-eaten apple. He stares, lost. Shun, who never wants to get involved, disappears before you blink. Typical.
Act Two: The Test of Elements
That night, their clan holds the Elemental Dance. Odd shadowy officials from the central coven watch on. Ryuu’s turn comes. He knows what’ll happen—it always does. He lifts his hand, tries to shape the water from the jar, and again it flashes. Instead of a wave or stream, blue fire hisses to life on his palm.
A hush takes the crowd. Uncle Daichi mutters under his breath, “A spark? In water’s heart?” Grandmother Tsuru draws herself up. “No child of Hanabusa bears fire.” Ryuu’s vision goes fuzzy as the crowd’s whispers float. Is he even one of us?
Act Three: Hunt for the Source
Miyako isn’t scared of him, and Ryuu is grateful for that. “Let’s check the river,” she says at dawn. It sounds simple, but her jaw twitches the way it always does before trouble. Shun tags along, dragging his rubber boots. “If a river god shows up, I’m hiding in the trees.”
Down at the riverbank, something strange waits for them. Not just missing fish, but a molten edge where water meets air—glass formed by unseen heat. Ryuu kneels, hand out. As he sees his palm flicker, the blue flame comes so quickly nobody talks. Something changes in the air.
Act Four: The Ripple Effect
Miyako grabs his arm. “That’s no water power, but it’s real. Feels warm—like home.” Ryuu asks, “So what do I do with it?” Miyako grins. “We find out.”
Suddenly, the sky darkens. Sheets of rain slice the path. Claws of wild wind peel the dock into splinters. Ryuu cannot control his fire and the storm wants to sink them. He jumps to shield Miyako. Shun cries, “Something’s wrong—it’s not stopping!” Ryuu points toward the deep current.
A voice cuts through the rain—cold, dry, and furious. “Who dares greet the boundary of rivers and flames?” Standing in swirling mist is a figure in blue. Ancient. Dry, but furious. The air tightens; even Shun shuts up.
Act Five: The Element In Between
Ryuu, locked to the ground, asks quietly, “Are you a god? Or are you just angry that fire crossed your path?” The being barely turns to look.
“Some things shouldn’t meet. When they do, they either break—or change,” it says. Ryuu steps forward, fist clenched. “Maybe that’s the point.” Blue fire leaps and dances behind him, reaching, swirling where water should run free.
Cliffhanger: Faultlines
The world shakes for a moment, and Ryuu feels the river answer. Not with rage, but with a flood of old, deep power. The storm spirit’s shape flickers—half-fear, half-respect. It says: “You can’t hold this and walk away the same.”
Miyako grips Ryuu’s shoulder as if she’ll pull him back at any hint of danger. “Are you sure?” she whispers. Do you think he is?
To be continued.
