Episode 4: Whispers at Midnight: The Faceless Train

Night in Yukimura City is never truly silent. Riku Hanabira, a tired high school boy with circles under his eyes, doubts most things he hears. He’s stopped listening to old legends—until midnight, April 12. Will you ever walk home without a second thought again?

Riku slips a hand into his coat. He walks past that warped train station as the clock strikes twelve. Wind cuts through the ticket gates. That’s when he hears it—a funny low whistle that no train in the city makes. His best friend, Mizuki, waits for him inside the empty platform. “Took you long enough, slowpoke,” she smirks. But her voice shakes a little. “Did you hear about the disappearance?” she asks.

There’s that legend, right? Every few years, if someone’s caught waiting for the midnight line at the Nakajo stop, the next train has no windows, no engineer, and rotten doors. If you enter, you see your face vanish in the glass. If you linger inside, rumors say you don’t come back. Mizuki grins and nudges Riku. “Scared yet?” she jokes.

But then the real train skips the station. Tracks echo as a pale empty coach slides through, slow and soundless. It stops, though nobody hit the brakes. Mizuki grips Riku’s sleeve—”No way, that’s not—wait, someone’s in there.”

Sure enough, a girl in the faded Yukimura High uniform stands alone by the last door, not moving. Riku tries to pull Mizuki back, but she’s focused on the glass. The girl, pale and faded, just stares ahead. “Let’s go,” Riku starts, but the doors open wide, frost brushing out like a cold breath.

A dare turns into fear. Do you follow a dare if something bigger than ego is on the line? Mizuki edges forward, smartphone ready. Riku follows. Once they step inside, the shadows fold over the two. All around them, graffiti flickers on glass—the words “/WHERE IS YOUR FACE?/” creep across like noise on a TV. aicg-7074-img-2-6a305fd17db22.png

Mizuki’s hand trembles around the phone. “Glitch on the glass?” Riku shakes. “Looks like a curse writing itself.” The pale girl barely seems real. Quiet fills the car, breaking with the girl’s murmur: “I just wanted to see home.” Her face is oddly blurred—a human shape with missing features. Trucks up and down the car vibrate as shadows start rifling through the seats.

Mizuki drops her phone, glass shot through by frost. Onscreen, their faces stretch, mouths wide. Riku leaps for Mizuki’s arm. “We have to leave!” She stumbles after, but the door slides shut, soft and slow. No handles. Riku slams on the door as shadow-forms press. They wrap around Mizuki’s shoes, tugging, tears filling her eyes. “Don’t leave me! Don’t leave!”

Just then, an old station worker appears in the other car. Old Fushi-san, who lost his real job a year ago after a crash, stands in the doorframe, red lantern and all. “Hey! You kids don’t belong here!” he shouts. The shadows freeze. The pale girl’s mouth curves, not quite a smile, not quite a snarl. aicg-7074-img-3-6a305fba39682.png

Old Fushi mutters, “Legends have rules—you can’t steal the faces of two midnight trespassers if one still clings to hope. Run! Don’t look back!” Riku pulls Mizuki up. They bolt for the last door. With everyone’s heart slamming loud as the wheels below, Fushi blocks the ghost girl’s path.

Just as Riku collects Mizuki, he glances back. On the now-foggy glass, both he and Mizuki are clear, the stolen girl softly crying invisible tears against the cold steel rails. The last thing they hear is the wail of a whistle and the hint of a silent, never-found mouth whispering, “I remember.” They tumble out onto the station platform as the sun starts to rise. Fushi vanishes behind a wash of white morning neon. His lantern stays on the track. aicg-7074-img-4-6a305f8d9c156.png

The police never find out what happened at the Nakajo stop. Mizuki wipes her eyes as dawn stretches down the empty station. Breaking the silence, Riku asks, “Will she ever find her way—back?” He doesn’t sleep easy. Neither of them ever walk near that platform at night—yet one night the phone rings. It’s Fushi. Or is it? The screen flickers, his lantern glowing inside. An unknown text—”One more ride? Midnight. Don’t be late.”

The arc ends in a slow zoom on the Nakajo stop. Atop the rails, a red lantern glows. Reflected in glass: Mizuki and Riku, staring across a growing tide of faceless echoes, waiting for midnight. To the reader: If a train with no driver and frozen glass stops, would you step aboard—just for a dare?
