Breakpoint Apex: Neon Engines Arc

Shou Oikawa doesn’t sleep before a race. It’s 2:45 a.m. He taps through memories of the first real track his mom ever took him to, near Tokorozawa—long gone now.
“If you drop the line even for one split second, Shou, that’s what counts,” she’d told him.

Just hours before the Neon Wheels Grand. Shou stares out his apartment window at uneven light, tries to feel his uncle’s belief. Under his sheets, the new tournament invite screen glows from his drivepad: their city’s biggest underground tournament, winner gets two things—the old championship badge, and a test ride with Project-Eve, the rumored fastest mecha kart out of all Shuto angel circuits.

Shou’s not gunning for fame. His real goal is Junpei, his best friend, now day rival—since Junpei took Kowloon Edge Social and wiped the last city tournament with a new type of power glide. That’s been a sore spot. “Tell me what trick you used,” Shou whined last week. Junpei didn’t smile. “Race me again. I’ll show you then.” What makes a grudge between friends, anyway?

There’s Marika too, ace modifier—once on Junpei’s team, now Shou’s tuner. People say she’s switched sides, but if you’ve heard her hum under her breath with a primer in one hand and a nano-weld stick in the other—well, you know why she’s the best on any crew. Shou tells her straight: “This isn’t about the badge. If Junpei can pull that edge again, we both need to know how.” She shrugs. “Who says he’s winning?”

Beneath Kureato City’s old toll-layer, underpatch digital sparks mark the checkpoints. Racers plug in, trade parts, dial in subraces—night after night. Marika walks Shou through her tweaks—she’s dropped weight, upped grip, and tampered with the center core even against printed specs.
“That’s two seconds faster at the last triple apex,” she says. Her smile stretches. “But to win, you’ll need more than that.”

The Tournament Day

Junpei fiddles with his helmet visor off to the left side. “You ready for this, Oikawa? Need me to send the medbot after you?'” That little half-grin—it’s there, then gone.

Rough racers from Nakano swarm into the drivers’ grid at lane 7. First match: Shou faces Tami, napkin king of the street ramps, always in wrong gear until it’s right. Tens on the stands, digital odds jump. You see Shou’s hands sweat inches from the start lever. “Don’t miss second gear—she always jumps on the high cam,” Marika warns in his ear.
Do whispers matter after the countdown lights?

Zero lift-off. Shou’s line tight, arc tightening into late turns.

First corner: Tami jumps, cuts inside, slams Shou a fraction off track. Shou’s scrapes the barrier—“Gear! Gear, now!”—his engine whines, he takes second, crowd gasps to his wheel dance. Unreal to think: the next checkpoint is the fabled Neon Apex.

The Turning Night

Between matches: the city shifts. Rival teams vet each other’s carts in secrecy, checking for black mods and forbidden code. Marika spots someone from Kowloon snooping one pit over. They swap cold glances but say nothing yet.
Do you think they’re planning sabotage, or has old crew rivalry just boiled up?

In the pits, Shou listens. He can’t shake an old story: an unknown Honda logo once pasted on Junpei’s home rig, years back, but no one could ever prove a swap. Some still believe Shou ghostwrote the hack.

Second stage. Ten racers left. Street curves tighten, track’s digital overlays begin to curve to match speed output. Junpei cleanly wins his without breaking a sweat. “Still running analog?” he sneers when Shou walks by—teasing, but something off in the stare. Marika notes it too.
What’s changed in his software, can you guess?

Third race, then semifinals. Wreck at gate 3—a mecha-kart wipes out, pieces flung near the safety line. Every tire shudders from the shake, spectators howl. In the chaos, word spreads: Project-Eve sits covered near the edge, monitored under drone lights, untouched. No one is allowed near.

Shou knows the winner gets to test-drive that weird glittering body. Marika shrugs when he wonders aloud, “What would you even do with a machine like that?” She laughs: “I’d punch reality itself.” He nods. “I want to ask Junpei, though, not just win.”

The Junpei Confrontation

Semifinal comes fast. Shou vs Ken Yu, ex-pro from tunnel routes.

He’s rumored to sandbag to watch before striking. Bikes rumble; pulses jitter. Shou goes early, Ken lags and fakes a baseline until checkpoint four—he surges in microseconds. Two of Ken’s bots align just right for a shield, borderline foul. Officials turn a blind eye?. Marika doubles down with stats, logging time codes for a protest. “Did you see that?” she mouths.

Last turn, last lap. Shou drops to the far side, risks a wheelbrake—then threads through both bots. He wins by half a tire. Stand howls. But someone sees one of his stickers spark red.
Is his own grip failing? Or did Ken sabotage mid-race?

Junpei watches from shadows, helmet open, eyes on Shou. He steps over, voice tight. “So now we both broke some rules…” Pause. “What’s your price if the machine wants another soul?” It’s a wild question, and the air feels hotter for it.

Neither wants to explain, yet everything’s about to tip. Finals come next: just the two friends, the crowd electric, Project-Eve moved closer, idle screens flickering neural rainbows.
Marika tucks a note in Shou’s glove: Don’t let their rules shape your race. He nods, hands shaking but certain. Then Junpei’s shadow crosses onto grid. Their glances are every story unspoken—regret, want, some half-debt in clear night air.

Race call comes. Spectators line up. Chrome arcs bend ahead, glowing lines hypnotic. Project-Eve, huge and silent, waits like a god below broken light. Count hits five.

This isn’t just for game, fame or an edge—the final is for closure, and something broken being put right. Marika’s voice, soft in Shou’s drive feed: “If you don’t trust anything else, trust the line.” Shou sets his stance, studies Junpei’s rear coil. Junpei flashes peace sign just above the visor—no one smiles this time.

Countdown is on.

Their launch shakes metal struts and spins sharp in rain shimmer. First turn comes, both neck and neck—Shou holds inside, Junpei’s headlamp flashes, his undercarriage a storm of sparks. Half-lap in, Junpei shoves the edge—But this time, something else happens. New blue core light flickers under Shou’s cart, and a silent alarm in Junpei’s head-up pops: ‘Code divide detected’. What now, reader—who bends? Who breaks?

The episode ends on a battery’s eerie whine, and neither has crossed the tape yet.
